Bonney Lake library closed for renovation
Bonney Lake Library will be closed July 19 through Aug. 1.
When the doors reopen on Aug. 2, Bonney Lake Library patrons will have the option of checking out books CDs, videos and other library materials own their own, using express checkout terminals. The express check stations, which are similar to those in some grocery and other retail stores, will offer customers fast, efficient check outs.
Once a patron has selected the materials they want to check out, they will go to one of three computer terminals in the center of the library entrance, scan their library card, scan a bar code on their books, CDs and other materials, select exit on the computer screen, then they are done checking out their materials.
"Express check is wildly popular at Peninsula Pierce County Library, where we piloted the service this spring," said Neel Parikh, library director. "We thought this would be popular, but patrons have exceeded our expectations."
At Peninsula Library, 89 percent of patrons are using express check. The library system is offering the self checkout to give people more and better customer service, because staff will be out from behind the desk and on the floor among the books and directly helping people.
Also, when the doors reopen at Bonney Lake Library, patrons may quickly select books from Books Plus to go, which is an offering of trade paperbacks and recent best sellers. Peninsula Library piloted this service, which has also been very successful. On average, nearly 700 books a week are checked out of the Books Plus to go section.
While Bonney Lake Library is closed, patrons may pick up books they've placed on hold in the library's meeting room from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
Within the next year, seven more of the 17 Pierce County libraries plan to offer express check and Books Plus to go. Parkland should get these services later this summer, and by the end of this year, South Hill should have the services. Then, next year, Summit, Lakewood, Sumner and Graham are scheduled. University Place will be the final branch to offer express check and Books Plus to go.
