Plateau districts set graduation dates

By Brenda Sexton, The Courier-Herald

Just weeks after proposing a June 21 graduation date, the Enumclaw School District has switched back to its original June 14 graduation date for Enumclaw High School seniors.

Superintendent Art Jarvis informed the school board and audience at the board's regular meeting Jan. 26 of the difficulties with scheduling and rescheduling the activities that surround graduation. He said school districts were waiting to see if the state would grant dispensation for school days missed due to December's windstorm and January's snowstorm, something the state chose not to do. In Enumclaw and White River, students will attend 180 days of school.

In Enumclaw, Friday was already taken as a makeup day. The others will be June 18, 21, 22 and 23. June 24 and 25 were left open if there are additional days to make up. EHS seniors have one more day to make up, and that will be addressed within the high school system.

"We were looking for a way to do it (graduation) with the least disruptions," Jarvis said. "It was the 14th. For a very brief time it was the 21st, and now its the 14th again."

The board approved the changes.

White River

The White River School District will stick with its June 15 graduation date and will make up its other days at the end of the year, extending the school year to June 24. The school board announced the decision Jan. 31 during a special meeting. The seniors will make up two days sometime before graduation. The decision as to which days will be made between staff and students.
