White River School District students were warned last week of a registered sex offender who has moved into the area. Michael Kenneth Sharp recently was registered as a transient living at a residence in the Prairie Ridge area of the 22000 block of 131st Street Court East.

A single-sheet flier, containing a photo of Sharp, was sent home with students last week.

Sharp has recently been released from custody related to a probation violation. He will be under community supervision by the Washington State Department of Corrections. Parents are urged to remind their children to use caution and personal safety measures.

Sharp is not wanted for any current offense, but he is believed to be a high risk to re-offend and is classified as a Level 3 Sex Offender.

He was convicted of two counts of third degree child rape and third degree attempted rape, involving a 13-year-old girl and a 14-year-old girl.

Sharp didn't participate in sexual deviancy treatment in 1998 for the attempted rape conviction. He did participate in sex offender treatment for seven months with little gain or results during his incarceration in 2001, according to a Pierce County Sheriff's Department release.

He also has a criminal history that includes possession of stolen property, burglary, second degree theft and many misdemeanor convictions for assault, escape, malicious mischief and theft.

Sharp, 25, is white, with brown hair and green eyes. He is 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs 170 pounds.

For more information the public can call Det. Sgt. Keith Barnes at the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, 253-798-2971. Additional sex offender information can be found at www.piercesheriff.org
