Extended filing nets candidates
No one filed for Buckley City Council position No. 4 during the regular filing period, but the position will have a new councilwoman at the beginning of next year.
In the final day of the three-day special filing period for Pierce County, two Buckley residents - Beverly Schneider and Cristi Boyle-Barrett - filed for the position currently held by incumbent Kim Walthers. Walthers decided against running again.
Schneider had previously filed for position No. 5, along with Ron Weigelt, but re-filed for position No. 4. Weigelt will automatically assume the No. 5 council position in 2004. Schneider and Boyle-Barrett will both advance to the general election in November.
Buckley City Administrator Dave Schmidt said if no one had filed, the position, according to state statute, would have been considered "lapsed." The position would have been taken from the ballot and the current incumbent would stay in that position until the next election unless Walthers decided to resign.
In other empty positions on the Plateau, David Youmans of Buckley filed for the Burnett Water Commissioner position No. 3, a four-year unexpired term; Scott Bowen of Crystal Mountain filed for the Crystal Mountain Sewer District Commissioner position No. 1, a two-year unexpired term; and Daniel Dennehy of Enumclaw filed for the Crystal Mountain Sewer Commissioner pos. No. 3, a six-year term.
