A 7-year-old girl drowned early Friday evening in Deep Lake, a popular recreation area just a few miles north of Enumclaw.

The girl - identified as Carly M. Williams of Kent - was playing with other children in the lake, which is part of Nolte State Park. She was reportedly swimming outside a buoyed area without a life vest. Witnesses saw her struggling and a few attempted to find the girl after she slipped below the surface, but with no success.

The call went out for Rescue One, part of Enumclaw/Fire District 28, and divers were eventually able to locate the victim. By that time, she had been under water for about an hour and could not be revived.
