Dave Enslow is defending his record as Sumner mayor against councilmember Matthew Richardson, who filed for candidacy June 5.

Richardson stated one of the reasons he’s running is his disagreement with certain policy decisions, citing a proposed manufacturing and industrial center zoning overlay to 2,200 acres of north Sumner.

Enslow said while Sumner could benefit from the proposal in the form of receiving grants, it’s not his decision whether the city adopts the proposal; rather, it is up to members of the City Council.

“It’s not my call. It’s theirs,” Enslow said.

Enslow said the proposed manufacturing center would allow Sumner to qualify for more grants. The roads in the area are in need of maintenance and money is tight, he said.

The mayor said he is proud of the fact Sumner has the lowest property taxes in Pierce County, in spite of the economic hardships being faced.

Enslow said he’s pleased the city is able to provide services to its citizens in a tough economy and he is happy that citizens are able to get their needs met.

Enslow said he is proud of the Puyallup River flood wall and the community garden during his time as mayor.

Looking to the future, Enslow said he hoped to have a YMCA facility in town and he started laying the groundwork for this more than a year ago, he said.

He said he works hard for a solution to the city’s water rights.

“I’m proud of what Sumner has become and I’m proud of my part of it. I’ve got a good record here and I’m proud of that record,” Enslow said. “The best is yet to come.”
