SUMNER: Students raise funds for officers’ families
December 27, 2009 · Updated 1:46 PM
After hearing about the tragedy of four Lakewood police officers killed inside a Parkland coffee shop Nov. 29, four local girls decided to put on a bake sale to help raise money for the officers’ families.
On Dec. 5 and Dec. 6 McAlder Elementary students Lauren Meyer, 9, Rylee Meyer, 10, Karly Anderson, 9, and Sydney Green, 11, raised $2,000 with all the funds going to the Lakewood Police Independent Guild (LPIG).
“The girls wanted to do something to help their families. They all like baking,” Jessica Meyer, mother of Lauren and Ryle, said.
The girls and other volunteers baked cupcakes, cookies and cheesecakes. Jessica Meyer said neighbors assisted with baking duties. Some people donated without buying sweets.
In the freezing temperatures the four stood outside from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. for two days collecting money for the officers’ families.
The girls brought the money to the police department the day before the memorial for the officers.
