New trees being planted in Sumner

Sumner recently had the hanging baskets program restored to an extent and more greenery is on the way in the form of trees.
"Every year we have some trees planted," said Diane Supler, Sumner's finance director and interim city administrator.
Trees will provide cleaner air, shade along the streets and improve aesthetics, Supler said.
Under the Arbor Day Foundaion cities petition and become a tree city USA, stating a commitment to greenery.
"We have a wonderful forestry commission," she said.
Supler said in response to the recession the budget of the Forestry Commission is significantly reduced.
"We're going to plant a few trees there to provide some shade," Supler said.
The 18 new globe ash trees are being planted Saturday along Everett Street, a couple trees in rainier view park.
"Sometimes it helps with grant applications and receiving funding for transportation improvements involving landscaping by indicating the city's commitment as a tree city," she said.
