In what was one of the most talked-about races in the region, Sen. Pam Roach had little trouble holding onto her seat in the 31st Legislative District, defeating challenger Matt Richardson in what became one of the most bitterly-fought races in the state.
Election Day is Tuesday, meaning all mail-in ballots must be postmarked by the end of the day or deposited in one of the 20 ballot drop sites set up but the Auditor’s office. Ballot drop boxes lock at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Pierce County is also the last county in Washington to offer polling place elections. The county will open 56 polling places on Tuesday.
Following on the heels of an unexpected endorsement of Roach by “Independent Democrat” Rep. Chris Hurst, former Roach opponent Yvonne Ward and former 31st statehouse candidate Karen Willard, the 31st Legislative District Democrats have issued a press release of their own making it clear that the trio of candidates were speaking for themselves and not the party.
“... Members of the executive board of the 31st L.D. Democrats wish it known that we do not endorse Pam Roach or any Republican,” reads the Oct. 1 release. “We are at a loss as to why any declared Democrat or ‘Independent Dem’ would do so.”
The decision by Chris Hurst, Yvonne Ward and Karen Willard comes in the wake of revelations of allegations about the past of Roach’s challenger, Sumner City Councilman Matt Richardson.
