Sumner High boys swim and dive team may have lost its final regular-season meet to larger Class 3A Enumclaw 100-72 Thursday, but the Spartans still claimed the South Puget Sound League 2A title with a perfect record.

The Spartans focus now on postseason with the league meet set for Friday and Saturday in Lakewood. It is a subdistrict, nonqualifying meet, but should give coach Dana Powers’ team a chance to shore up before the district and state meet.

The Spartans will be taking Neil Bateman to the district meet. He qualified Thursday in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 58.52 seconds. Josh Goodsell will also advance after shaving 20 seconds off his 500 freestyle time.

Shayd Breckenridge qualified with a 6:29.97 in the 500 freestyle; district qualifying time is 6:30.00.

Jobe Layton needed to drop 1.5 seconds from his best time to make the district cut in the 100 backstroke. He did it easily Thursday.

The Spartans also used the meet to honor their seniors: Layton, Breckenridge, Bateman, Trent Powers, Zane Gustafson and Evan Quaschnik.
