SHS SOCCER: Spartans mow down Franklin Pierce
The Sumner High girl's soccer squad has taken on all of the personality of a road grader, clearing away any foe that dares to step into its path.
Last week was no exception as it mowed over first Franklin Pierce 5-1 and then, in a Thursday rematch with White River, blanked the Hornets 2-0 to sweep that regular season series.
The onslaught on its home pitch with Franklin Pierce, a 5-1 whipping at Sunset Chev Stadium on Oct. 4, was truly a red letter day for sizzling Spartan striker, Kaylie Rozell who lit up the Cardinals, amassing four goals off assists from Krista Morford, Ellie Degoede, Gabby Degoede and Makinzie Endicott. The fifth tally was an unassisted score by Megan Fenton in the donnybrook's opening minutes.
After soundly trouncing Franklin Pierce, the Spartans moved on to enemy territory to mix it up with a riled up swarm of Hornets in Buckley. The first time these two squared off, SHS had claimed a 1-0 victory, so the Hornets were hoping to ambush the Spartans.
Sumner turned the tables to again defeat White River. Rozell notched a goal at the 20-minute mark of the close contest off an assist from Morford and Fenton legged in the insurance score using an assist from Brooke Lancaster in the waning moments.
Sumner freshman netminder Jamie Lange logged her third shutout of the young campaign to help maintain the Spartans' untarnished 7-0 league mark.
Sumner put its unblemished league record on the line Tuesday, trekking Eatonville, and welcomes Clover Park to Sunset Chev Stadium Thursday.
