Sumner's boys cross country team remains undefeated in South Puget Sound League 2A after a dual meet against Clover Park and Franklin Pierce. They pulled out a 25-30 win over Franklin Pierce and a 19-44 win over Clover Park.
The girls team ran what coach Kristin Chapman called a "heartbreaking race," with a 28-27 loss to Franklin Pierce.
The boys' Arturo Perez led the Spartans with an overall second-place win, finishing in 17 minutes, 30 seconds. Nate Weber took fourth with 17:42, and Coltin Tanner sixth with 17:50.
"It was an amazing race for these hard working, driven guys," Chapman said.
Despite their loss, the Spartans girls team racked up several personal best times. Abi Hensler took first place with a 20:09 finish. Natasha Wilson came in fourth at 21:10 and Anna Hurd came in sixth with 21:52.
The team travels to Marysville Saturday for the Twilight Cross County Invitational, and they take on Steilacoom Oct. 4.
